THE INDIVIDUAL CHARACTERISTICS BY WHICH A PERSON OR THING IS RECOGNIZED. According to the World English Dictionary, this is one definition of IDENTITY. Another is THE STATE OF HAVING UNIQUE IDENTIFYING CHARACTERISTICS HELD BY NO OTHER PERSON OR THING.
The different aspects of our identity define who we are, how we see ourselves, and how others see us. Labels. Society loves labels. They make life so easy, so safe. You are from THAT country? Oh, you will behave this way and that is all I need to know about you. No one has to think, they can merely accept the stereotype invoked by the label.
And isn’t it easier to live your life according to some other person’s idea of what it should be? “You are a woman, you have to do this type of work or use these words but never those.” SO much easier to accept the bars of your cage than it is to live freely.
But then what happens to your IDENTITY? Not the outer labels, but your core? You have thrown it away. And if you do not have the strength to find it again, you will be a sheep in the herd forever, without a single thought of your own in your head.
In any society, even this global one we live in now, we have to follow basic guidelines for behavior. But this does not mean we have to conform to the point of losing that core identity. Nor do we need to perpetuate the stereotypes that were created by ignorance in the past.
We must recognize and celebrate the traditions of our countries, acknowledge that they helped shape us as the individuals we are today, and then use them to create a new society. One where each person is celebrated for his or her core identity, not shunned because they do not fit an outdated mould. A society with each nation made of people who are proud of who they are, what they were, and what they will become: citizens of the universe.
Are we dreamers? Of course. But we are working step by step to achieve the dream and we hope you will join us. Do something to celebrate YOUR identity on June 21st. Take the first step on a journey to the universe. Imagine!!
